Behold the Lord

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.
– Romans 12:2
|
|
|
|
Inside, you're perfect—born
again in the image of Jesus Himself. But outwardly do you find yourself
falling frustratingly short of that perfection? Is there a solution?
Yes! The secret lies in "the renewing of your mind."
Romans 12:2 tells us that, if you'll renew your mind, you can actually be "transformed." That word transformed is translated from the Greek word from which we get the term metamorphosis. It's used in Scripture in two other places. One of those places is when Jesus was transfigured on the Mount as He spoke with Moses and Elijah. The other is found in 2 Corinthians 3:18. It says, "But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord." Changed, transformed, transfigured! Those are powerful, exciting words, and they describe what will happen to you as you spend time beholding the Lord in the Word and in prayer. As you spend time renewing your mind, your outer being will be transformed in much the same way as a caterpillar is changed into a butterfly. Instead of conforming to the image of the world, you'll begin to conform to the image of the reborn spirit within you which is created in righteousness and true holiness. Take time to get away from the world and study God's Word. Meditate on it and let it change you from the inside out. Be transformed by the renewing of your mind and release the beautiful spiritual butterfly that's living in you! Source: Scripture Reading: 2 Corinthians 3:6-18 |

Behold the Lord
Peace at Home
Peace at Home
|
|
For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
– James 3:16
|
|
|
|
Have you ever noticed that the
easiest place to remain self-centered is at home? There's an incentive
to be lovely with others, but with your family you are tempted to allow
yourself more selfish privileges, as if it didn't count there.
Before I was a Christian, I was more courteous and nicer to friends than to my own family. I was more demanding and less forgiving with those dearest to me than with anyone else. But after I made Jesus Lord of my life, I realized all that had to change. Gloria and I began to learn through the Word how important harmony is within our family. We learned that if we wanted the power of agreement (see Matthews 18:19) to work in our lives, we could not allow strife in our home. Strife drops the shield of faith, stops prayer results and invites Satan and his cohorts into your midst. Discord is deadly. It paralyzes the power of God in your life. Don't allow the enemy to stop you at your own front door by allowing strife in your home. If you do, you'll be no threat to him anywhere else. Put the power of harmony to work in your family. The Choice Is Yours
The Choice Is Yours
|
Choose you this day whom ye will serve.
– Joshua 24:15
|
Choosing to side with God's Word
is a continual challenge. It's not something you do just once. It's a
process of choosing to believe and act upon the Word of God over and
over in every circumstance.
That's what everyone has to do. Years
ago I decided I was going to choose Jesus. Since then I've had to choose
Him again and again in situations every day. I've chosen Him as my Lord
and Savior. I've chosen Him as my Healer. I've chosen Him as my
Financier. I've chosen Him as head of my household. I've chosen Him as
head of this ministry. And I still have to choose Him moment by moment.
Sometimes that choice gets tough, but God has promised it will never get too tough. In 1 Corinthians 10:13,
He says, "There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to
man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above
that ye are able." What the Lord is saying is that He will not allow you
to be subjected to a temptation you're unable to overcome. With every
temptation, He'll make a way of escape. He'll always make sure you have a
choice.
The devil doesn't come tempt you while God is off
somewhere else, unaware of what is happening to you. The Spirit of God
is constantly there with you, providing you with the way to overcome. In
other words, God matches even the toughest temptations with the weapons
and power you need to conquer them. He always makes it possible for you
to choose life.
So choose to walk in love. Choose to walk by faith. Choose to live by the Word. Jesus is the Way! Choose Him!

His Extravagant Love
|
|
And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God.
– Deuteronomy 28:2
|
|
|
|
Some people have very low
expectations of what God will provide for them materially. They trust
Him to feed and clothe them, but they don't trust Him to feed and clothe
them very well!
Somehow they've gotten the idea that God's an old miser who will do little more than put rags on their backs and beans on their tables. But that's not what Jesus told us. He said in Matthew 6 that God would clothe us better than He clothed Solomon. That one statement alone proves that God wants to do more than just meet our basic needs. He wants to bless us abundantly. I know that from personal experience. A few years ago I came home and found two expensive automobiles parked in my driveway. They'd been given to me to use by men who'd been blessed by the Lord through my ministry. I was baffled. "Lord," I said, "I didn't need these cars. I hadn't asked You for them, and I wasn't believing for them. What are they doing here?" Then the Lord spoke up on the inside of me. Have you ever read the scripture in Deuteronomy that says blessings shall come on and overtake those who hearken to My voice? "Yes," I answered. Well, son, He said, you've just been overtaken. Am I saying God gave me those expensive cars just so I could enjoy them? Yes. That's exactly what I'm saying. First Timothy 6:17 says, "[He] giveth us richly all things to enjoy." God is a loving Father. He gets great pleasure from blessing His children. He's extravagant where we're concerned. But don't let that worry you. He can afford it. Once you truly believe that and begin to hearken to His voice, it won't be long before His blessings will be overtaking you. Source: |

Better Things to Come

Have you ever wondered what it
will be like when your body dies and you go on to heaven? Well,
according to the Word, when that time comes, this flesh and blood tent
you live in will die, but you won't feel a thing. You'll just take off
the cloak of your flesh, lay it down and go to a better place.
Believers who have died and come back say that they have no sensation of loss—no sting. Their minds stay intact, and they even have arms and legs, but they are spirit and not flesh. One man said he couldn't even tell he wasn't in his body until he tried to grasp something. His hand would just go right through the material object. He was spirit and not flesh. According to the Apostle Paul, to be absent from the body is to be present with God (2 Corinthians 5:1). So, when God calls you home, you'll just abandon your fleshly body and go to be with Him forever. It's interesting though. God doesn't even refer to our old, abandoned bodies as being dead. He says they're just asleep. Why? Because He knows that just as sleep is temporary, so is the death of the body. He's planned a day when our sleeping bodies will be awakened and raised up in glory just like Jesus' was. Hallelujah! There's coming a day when not only our spirits have victory over death, our physical bodies do too! Death is not the "end" for you. It's only a change to a better place! Source: |
He Will Lead You
This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
– Galatians 5:16
|

|
|
||||
|
Walking in the spirit. That's
the key to overcoming the flesh. If you follow the prompting of the
Spirit of God within you, you won't be dominated by the pressure your
flesh tries to put on you.
As you listen to the written Word and
the Holy Spirit telling you what to do, you'll constantly be making
little adjustments in your life according to what He says. And those
little adjustments will keep darkness from overtaking you.
You
see, God knows just what you need. He can look ahead in your life and
see the traps and pressures the devil is laying for you. So follow the
Holy Spirit's leading and He will maneuver you safely around them to
victory.

OVERCOMING FAMILY PRESSURE
“Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?”
-Matthew 6:27-
-Matthew 6:27-
Having a family to watch your back and show you much care and love is a
wonderful experience. It gives you a feeling that you are not alone and
that you can always have people to fall back on in any case that you
need such help. At the same time though, some family members may make it
a point of duty to be a pain in the neck.
They have a special way of driving home what they want; making you feel so pressured as to do what they demand. Have you ever been confronted with quizzical looks asking you questions like, “When is it happening?” “When are we meeting him or her?” “All your mates have done this and that, what is happening to you?” The list goes on and on. These are questions that may make you want to rush into something you are not prepared for, or do what even you, don’t expect yourself to do.
First, you should know that their pressures, most of the time, are out of love, care, and concern; and so the way you handle them, matter. You should know your purpose, have your goals laid out, and have a time frame to achieve them as backed up by God. You must also be clear on what you stand for and be firm about it. Then others would respect you for that.

When confronted with pressures, always try to remain calm. Do not be
anxious for anything, as anxiety can lead to wrong decisions. More so,
never base your decisions on what people suggest to you. Weigh them and
evaluate them alongside your goals and purpose. By doing this, you can
work on the valued ones and discard the unnecessary.
Very importantly, you must not panic or give in to worries because of pressures. Worries make you sorry at the end, as they only bring depression; possibly making you settle for less. It also keeps you blind to what God has in store for you, because you stay glued to your past or present situation.
At all times, aim to keep your hope alive and keep your emotions in check. Remember, whether you succeed or fail at any task is first dependent on how you handle it.
Remain Blessed!

21 Books Written by and About Women That Every Man Should Read
This week, we read a great interview with Meg Wolitzer (whose just-released novel The Interestings
is currently being enjoyed by more than one member of this office).
“Men,” she says, “with very few exceptions, won’t read books about
women.” Though not exactly a new idea, this pronouncement gains a little
force by coming hot on the heels of GQ‘s “The New Canon: The 21 Books from the 21st Century Every Man Should Read,”
which contains (you guessed it, drumroll please, etc.) three books
written by women. Though we won’t disparage any of the books that made
the list, we will offer our own — as an attempt to work towards ameliorating the problem laid out by Wolitzer and neatly exemplified by GQ. After all, though there are three books by women on their list, only the Munro could really be said to be primarily about them. After the jump, 21 books by and about women that we think every man should read.
The Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret Atwood
Margaret Atwood is essential reading no matter your gender, and this
chilling depiction of a dystopian future is one of her best. In the
Republic of Gilead, women’s rights have been completely eradicated, and
the country is ruled by a racist, homophobic, misogynist,
ultra-conservative cult. As our editor-in-chief Judy Berman quipped,
“This is every woman’s worst nightmare that men have never thought
about.” So think about it.
Bad Behavior, Mary Gaitskill
Gaitskill’s incredible collection is filled with women walking the
borderlands — of sexual experience, of self-actualization, of family.
This book digs under your skin, titillates, forces you to re-evaluate
everything you ever thought about sex and love and what it means to be a
person in the world. This book is terrifying.
A Guide to Being Born, Ramona Ausubel
This one doesn’t come out until May, but we’ll recommend it now for
good measure. Ausubel’s luminous collection is organized around the
origins of life — that is, the stages of love, conception, gestation,
and birth — but her stories aren’t as simple as all that. Men may never
be able to feel the fetus in their stomach and be sure that it is a
three-headed giraffe, but with this collection, they’ll at least get a
taste.
Bossypants, Tina Fey
Everyone likes Tina Fey, so this shouldn’t be too hard a sell. The
comedian’s memoir is (obviously) hilarious, but also filled with
reflections on being an awkward girl, a woman in show business, and a
mother. You bros will be laughing so hard that you won’t even realize
you’re learning about what it’s like to be a real-life lady.
Speedboat, Renata Adler
In her aforementioned interview, Meg Wolitzer laments, “Something
nebulous and thought-based – a book of ideas – people seem much more
willing to have that from a man than a woman.” Well, here is exactly
that: a loose, penetrating, ruthless, glorious novel about a young
journalist making her way through New York City.
The Bloody Chamber, Angela Carter
The modern fairy tale, whether in retelling or creation, has become a
ripe area for feminist thought, for explorations of sexuality, for wit
and irony and vulgarity to seep out of what was once a prim little
moralistic package. No one does this better than Angela Carter, whose
rich retellings of the classic tales thrum with blood and language.
The Flamethrowers, Rachel Kushner
Here’s a special lure for all you male readers: girl racing
motorcycles across salt flats. Past that, the book is gritty and searing
and immediately essential, a subtle novel about art and love and truth
and a woman on a knife’s edge. Read it.
Self-Help, Lorrie Moore
No one does wry brilliance better than Lorrie Moore. In this
collection, she will teach you everything you need to know: how to talk
to your mother, how to be an other woman, how to become a writer, how to
live. Darkly comic and dazzling, it’s a way inside the head of all the
smart women you’ve ever known.
Heroines, Kate Zambreno
In Heroines, Zambreno traces the impact — or rather, the
exiling — of the female experience on and from literature, untangling
the stories of “the mad wives of modernism” both historical and
fictional, “who died in the asylum. Locked away, rendered safe.
Forgotten, erased, or rewritten.” Enlightening and intense, it’s a
must-read.
Kindred, Octavia Butler
In this novel, a 26-year-old modern black woman is suddenly (and then
repeatedly) transported back in time to a slave plantation in the
antebellum South, where she is subjected to all the harshest parts of
slavery as she protects the son of a slaveowner. Rarely does social
criticism come with such incendiary storytelling.
The Left Hand of Darkness, Ursula K. Le Guin
All right, we’re cheating with this one a little, since it can’t be
properly said to be about women at all — instead, it’s about a human man
who travels to an alien planet populated by a race of beings who are
genderless, or rather unisex, able to assume either binary gender during
reproduction. The novel is beautiful and filled with timeless
philosophical insights as to the nature of humanity and society — a
definite classic we’re happy to make an exception for here
Dora: A Headcase, Lidia Yuknavitch
Yuknavitch’s protagonist, the 17-year-old Ida, is a modern
reincarnation of Freud’s famous bisexual case study Dora, whom our most
famous shrink deemed “hysterical.” Ida may be a bit “hysterical” too —
but she’s taking back the term. She’s raunchy, irreverent, filled with
the desire to strip naked in the middle of “Nordfucks” or shave her
head, sidekicked by a beautiful gang of weirdos. “I want to create new
girl myths,” Yuknavitch said of the book. We think everyone should read them.
The Second Sex, Simone de Beauvoir
“I hesitated a long time before writing a book on woman,” De Beauvoir
begins. “The subject is irritating, especially for women; and it is not
new. Enough ink has flowed over the quarrel about feminism; it is now
almost over: let’s not talk about it anymore.” This was in 1959 — and
the sentiment is as fresh now as it was then, just like (most of) the
rest of De Beauvoir’s lucid book, equal parts literary and
philosophical. All else aside, it’s one of the most classic feminist
texts in the language. And men should read more of those.
The Woman Warrior, Maxine Hong Kingston
Maxine Hong Kingston’s take on the memoir blends her personal
experiences with traditional Chinese folktales, examining the
Chinese-American experience as well as the female one, taking on the
cultural source of oppression, something we could all do to think more
about. She writes: “There is a Chinese word for the female I — which is
‘slave’. Break the women with their own tongues!” So why even be a girl?
“I refused to cook. When I had to wash dishes, I would crack one or
two. ‘Bad girl,’ my mother yelled, and sometimes that made me gloat
rather than cry. Isn’t a bad girl almost a boy?” This is the kind of
thing most boys never have to think about.
The Bell Jar, Sylvia Plath
It’s pretty much a given that everyone should read The Bell Jar, but we’ll just drive the point home again — it’s a look into the conflicted mind of a tortured genius snuffed out too soon.
The House of Mirth, Edith Wharton
There is so much in this book that carries over perfectly to the modern era. Sure, maybe not the idea of tableaux vivants
as party diversions, but the double standards for men and women, the
vicious social games women play with each other, the perils of depending
on another person — these issues are all alive and well. Plus, the
novel is phenomenal. Can’t go wrong.
Excellent Women, Barbara Pym
John Updike, male of all males, called this high comedic novel “a
startling reminder that solitude may be chosen and that a lively, full
novel can be constructed entirely within the precincts of that
regressive virtue, feminine patience.” What the never-married, witty but
mild-mannered Mildred Lathbury would have to say about that, we cannot
say.
The Complete Claudine, Colette
Though Colette’s frisky stories aren’t nearly as scandalous today as
they were when they were first printed, she is still a giant of French
literature, and her writing is just about as daring, sexy, gorgeous, and
smart as she. As this book’s introduction describes it, Colette is
“[a]ccessible and elusive; greedy and austere; courageous and timid;
subversive and complacent; scorchingly honest and sublimely mendacious;
an inspired consoler and an existential pessimist — these are the
qualities of the artist and the woman.” A must for any reader who sees
female writing as only one thing
Drinking With Men, Rosie Schaap
Men love bar stories, right? Funny, smart, and insightful, Schaap’s memoir as a drinking buddy will make you a better person.
Inferno, Eileen Myles
Some men might be put off by a “poet’s novel,” but we bet they’ll be
on board once they read that killer first line: “My English professor’s
ass was so beautiful.” Myles can be difficult, but she can also be
incredible, and in this story of a young poet’s self-actualization,
she’s both. Take note.
Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi
We maintain that Satrapi’s beloved graphic memoir of growing up in
Iran during the Islamic Revolution is a must-read for absolutely
everyone, so including it here is a no-brainer. What does it mean to be a
tough little girl into rock music in a country that suppresses their
women? What does it mean to be a tough little girl? Satrapi will tell
you with grace, humor and delightful illustrations.Source: By Emily Templ

Must We Wait At Polling Centers After Casting Our Votes?
A few days ago, a friend approached me to clarify some issues touching on the guidelines on the forthcoming elections. In the course of discussing with him, I realised that he did not know the basic things about the entire electoral process. Thereafter, I sampled the opinion of others and I was surprised that they were also ignorant of the basic provisions of the Electoral Act, as amended. For instance, politicians and political parties often say things like: ‘Do not leave the polling units until results are declared to curtail any form of rigging or stealing of votes’ even with the presence of party representatives.
It should be known that every Nigerian citizen, who is 18 years and above and has a valid Permanent Voter Card (PVC), is eligible to vote. He/she is expected to check the voters’ register to ascertain that his/her names are written, correctly spelt and included on the list. In the course of voting, they should avoid wrong thumb-printing that could lead to many invalid ballot papers and void votes. As we prepare for the general elections on February 14 and 28, there is the need to remind ourselves of the salient sections of the Act, as follows:
Provision of Election Materials by INEC
43. (4) The Commission shall, before the commencement of voting in each election, provide all election materials for the conduct of such election at the Polling unit.
Hours of Poll
47. Voting in any particular election under this Act shall take place on the same day and time throughout the Federation.
Display of Ballot Boxes
48. (1) At the hour fixed for opening of the poll, before the commencement of voting, the Presiding Officer shall open the empty ballot box and show same to such persons as may lawfully be present at the Polling unit and shall then close and seal the box in such manner as to prevent its being opened by unauthorised person(s).
(2) The ballot box shall then be placed in full view of all present, and be so maintained until the close of poll.
Issuance of Ballot Papers
49. (1) Any person intending to vote with his voter’s card, shall present himself to a Presiding Officer at the Polling unit in the constituency in which his name is registered with his voter’s card.
(2) The Presiding Officer shall, on being satisfied that the name of the person is on the Register of Voters, issue him a ballot paper and indicate on the Register that the person has voted.
Right to Challenge
50. A candidate or a Polling Agent may challenge the right of a person to receive a ballot paper on such grounds and in accordance with such procedures as are provided for in this Act.
Separate Queues for Men and Women
51. The Presiding Officer shall separate the queue between men and women if in that area of the country, the culture is such that it does not permit the mingling of men and women in the same queue.
Over-voting
53.(1) No voter shall vote for more than one candidate or record more than one vote in favour of any candidate at anyone election.
(2) Where the votes cast at an election in any Polling unit exceed the number of registered voters in that Polling unit, the result of the election for that Polling unit shall be declared null and void by the Commission and another election may be conducted at a date to be fixed by the Commission where the result at that Polling unit may affect the overall result in the Constituency.
Personal Attendance
57. No voter shall record his vote otherwise than by personally attending at the Polling unit and recording his vote in the manner prescribed by the Commission. No person shall be permitted to vote at any Polling unit other than the one to which he is allotted.
(1) If at the time a person applies for a ballot paper and before he has left the Polling unit, a Polling agent, Polling unit official or security agent informs the Presiding Officer that he has reasonable cause to believe that the person is under the age of 18 years or has committed the offence of impersonation and gives an undertaking on a prescribed form to substantiate the charge in a court of law, the Presiding Officer may order a police officer to arrest that person and the Presiding Officer’s order shall be sufficient authority for the police officer so to act.
Closing of Poll
62(1) At the prescribed hour for the close of poll, the Presiding Officer shall declare the poll closed and no more person(s) shall be admitted into the Polling unit and only those already inside the Polling unit shall be allowed to vote.
(2) After the declaration of the close of polls, no voter already inside the Polling unit shall be permitted to remain in the polling unit unless otherwise authorized under this Act.
Bribery and Conspiracy
124. (1) Any person who does any of the following:
(a) directly or indirectly by himself or by any other person on his behalf, gives, lends or agrees to give or lend, or offers any money or valuable consideration;
(b) directly or indirectly, by himself or by any other person on his behalf, corruptly makes any gift, loan, offer, promise, procurement or agreement to or for any person, in order to induce such person to procure or to endeavour to procure the return of any person as a member of a legislative house or to an elective office or the vote of any voter at any election;
(3) Nothing in this section shall extend or apply to money paid or agreed to be paid for or on account of any lawful expenses bona fide incurred at or concerning any election.
(4) Any person who commits the offence of bribery is liable on conviction to a maximum fine of N500,000 or imprisonment for 12 months or both.
Requirement of Secrecy in Voting
125.(1) Every person in attendance at a Polling unit including every officer charged with the conduct of an election and his or her assistants and every Polling agent and candidate in attendance at a Polling station or at the collation centre, as the case may be, shall maintain and aid in maintaining the secrecy of the voting.
(2) No person in attendance at a Polling booth under this section shall, except for some purpose authorised by law, communicate to any person information as to the name or number on the register of any voter who has or has not voted at the place of voting.
(3) No person shall:
(a) interfere with a voter casting his vote, or by any other means obtain or attempt to obtain in a Polling unit information as to the candidate for whom a voter in that place is about to vote for or has voted for; or
(b) communicate at any time to any other person information obtained in a Polling unit as to the candidate to whom a voter is about to vote or has voted for.
(4) any person acting contrary to the provisions of this section commits an offence and shall be liable upon conviction to a maximum fine of N100,000 or to imprisonment for 6 months or both.
Voting by Unregistered Persons
127.(1) Any person who knowingly votes or attempts to vote in a Constituency in respect of which his name is not on the register of voters commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a maximum fine of N100,000 or to imprisonment for a term of 6 months or both.
(2) Any person who knowingly brings into a polling unit during an election a voters card issued to another person commits an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a fine of N100,000 or to imprisonment for 6 months or both.
Disorderly Conduct at Elections
128. Any person who at an election acts or incites others to act in a disorderly manner commits an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a maximum fine of N500,000 or imprisonment for a term of 12 months or both.
Offences on Election Day
(1) No person shall on the date on which an election is held do any of the following acts or things in a Polling unit or within a distance of 300 metres of a Polling unit:
(a) canvass for votes; (b) solicit for the vote of any voter; (c) persuade any voter not to vote for any particular candidate; (d) persuade any voter not to vote at the election; (e) shout slogans concerning the election; (f) be in possession of any offensive weapon or wear any dress or have any facial or other decoration which in any event is calculated to intimidate voters; (g) exhibit, wear or tender any notice, symbol, photograph or party card referring to the election; (h) use any vehicle bearing the colour or symbol of a political party by any means whatsoever; (i) loiter without lawful excuse after voting (my emphasis), or after being refused to vote.

Why Sexual Abuse Of Kids Is Increasing
•Mrs Josephine Effah-Chukwuma
What is child sexual abuse?
Child molestation or abuse is the physical, sexual or psychological abuse of a child, who according to the Child Rights Act, is anyone below the age of eighteen (18). Child sexual abuse on the other hand, specifically is sexual assault of a girl or boy below the age of 18. These include acts such as indecent exposure of private body parts to a child, indecent assault (making a child to touch, caress or suck your private part); rape, incest, defilement etc.
What are the different categories of child sexual abuse?
Like I said earlier, child molestation or abuse, can be physical, sexual and psychological. A male or female child can be molested.
Under what age bracket do sexually abused children fa into?
Children of all ages from months old to 18 years, can be molested sexually. In fact we are witnessing more cases of younger children under age ten, being molested sexually.
Do you think child sexual abuse is on the increase? Why is it so?
Yes there seems to be an increase in child sexual abuse/molestation in Nigeria. Almost as if we have an epidemic on our hands, as hardly a day goes by, that there wouldn’t be one reported case of rape or the other in either the print or electronic media. The seeming increase could also very well be due to increased reporting, as a result of public awareness of the issue, and the need to take action to end it. Silence aids its continued perpetration.
Why do adults abuse under-age children?
There are really no reasons for adults sexual abuse of children, who in most cases, know, love, and trust these adults to protect them. What reason can an adult give for sexually molesting a child? Is it indecent dressing, seduction or what? Paedophiles are just psychopaths and social deviants.
Why is it that child abuse continues unabated despite public spirited campaigns against it?
Sexual offences, especially rape, incest and defilement of children, seem to be continuing unabated, because of poor response to reported cases by our law enforcement officials, (lack of diligence in investigation and prosecution) and delays in the judiciary. If investigations by the police are to be diligently carried out, prosecuted, and suspects given maximum sentencing, it would serve as a deterrent to others.
Furthermore, there is need for aggressive mass sensitisation programmes on how sexual abuse of children especially can be prevented. The key things to ensure in preventing sexual abuse of children, are ACCESS and OPPORTUNITY. Sexual abuse of a child can only occur, if a predator has both access and opportunity to a child. So the question is, who has access to our children?
As a gender rights activist what has your experience been like, as regards handling cases of child sexual abuse?
As a gender rights activist, my experience of sexual abuse of children has been quite disheartening and very challenging. Challenging in the sense that the first response by members of the public, including family members to a child’s allegation, is DISBELIEF.Moreso, if the adult in question is seen to be “a publicly respectable person, or a father figure”. BIG MISTAKE this is, as according to Shakespeare, you can not read the mind’s construction on the face. You can not know a criminal by mere looking at him or her.
What has been the most intriguing case of child sexual abuse you have handled so far?
.There has been two most intriguing cases I have handled in the last 4 years. One was one of a father sexually abusing his eldest daughter, and threatening her that if she runs away, he would move to the two younger ones (he had 3 girls); the second is the recent one of two girls in an orphanage alleging that the owner of the orphanage is sexually abusing them and other girls in the home, and that it has been going on for a while.
Are there any national statistics to show frequency of occurrence in society?
There are really no national statistics. On rape and other sexual offences in Nigeria, which is unfortunate, as without such statistics, a national response to this seeming epidemic, is not possible.
Some fathers sexually abusing their daughters. What is responsible for that?
I really don’t know, or can’t understand why a father would sexually abuse his. Own biological daughter, other than such a father is MAD and should be put away in an asylum. It is wicked an sickening, and is a SIN before God and man.
Does Sophie House, your shelter, also a have a space for children that have been sexually abused?
Our shelter for abused women and young girls, known as Sophia’s Place does offer temporary refuge for girls who have been sexually abused. Common sense dictates that a child who is alleging sexual abuse in the home by a family member or guardian, needs to be immediately taken away from that environment. We come in there. If the government does not have a home to keep such a child, while investigations are going on, we can offer that service. But we expect that the child’s mother would accompany the child to the shelter, in order to care for her child.
There is a story about a woman who severed the penis of a man who sexually abused her relation? What is your reaction? And why do you think the woman took that action
That was an extreme action I must say, by the child’s mother, but I must confess that I am not sure I would do differently if I were in her shoes. Imagine you walking in to see your daughter being defiled. Temporary insanity will engulf you. Furthermore, the Criminal Justice System, starting with the police, is not sensitive to the plight of rape victims and their families/friends both in the way they respond and investigate these crimes. There is also the issue of delay in the courts.
Are there laws in the Nigerian criminal code against child sexual abuse? Do you think that law is enough deterrent?
There are laws in both the criminal and penal codes of both southern and northern Nigeria, on child sexual abuse, but in my opinion, they are not stringent enough. I believe the penalty for sexually abusing a child should be as severe or more severe than armed robbery. This is because, it is abuse of innocence. The Nigerian Child Rights Act, which has not been enacted by all states of the federation, has tried to address the issue.
How do you rate the performance of law enforcement agents, especially the police with regards to child sexual abuse?
The police have been trying their best, but are greatly hampered by lack of training and poor logistics for quick response. Most of them, do not know what to do and how to handle cases of sexual violence. Policing and responding to sexual crimes requires a high level of sensitivity, and specialised skills in investigating and prosecuting. This, unfortunately, is lacking in the Nigeria Police. However, with training and logistics support, they can do much better.
Why are cases of child molestation not taken seriously in our society?
Cases of child molestation especially sexual molestation are often not taken seriously because people just don’t understand that SEX is different from RAPE. Some people believe it’s not a big deal, and besides, according to them “the child will grow up and forget”. VERY WRONG. The child will not grow and forget it. Instead she will grow up having several questions to ask about what happened to her.
In some African countries, minors are sexually abused because of the belief that sexual intercourse with a virgin cures HIV. Has child molestation decreased in those countries?
The believe that sex with a child cures HIV (infact infants), which triggered an increase in sexual abuse of children in South Africa, is all a myth. It hasn’t been scientifically proven. In response to that epidemic, the government of Thabo Mbeki at the time carried out aggressive sensitisation programmes, and set up one stop Medico-Legal centres, where victims could receive all the support services they needed – counselling, medical assistance, legal advice, and police statement. I remember at that time, hardly would you walk past any street, and not see a billboard or posters in English and native dialects on sexual abuse. I think it has gone down significantly.
How can sexual molestation be reduced or stopped in Nigeria?
Child sexual molestation can be significantly reduced through aggressive mass sensitisation programmes at all levels, targeting various stakeholders. While this is being done as a preventive measure, perpetrators should be punished to the limits of the law, to serve as a deterrent to others. Parents/guardians (especially mothers) should be careful about who they leave their children with. As I said earlier, access and opportunity are the two factors that make sexual abuse of children possible.
